About Book Remaster
Old books deserve another reading.
We love books. We love the stories and ideas they hold, the illustrations that make us stop and look, and the small decisions in a page’s typography. A book can be beautiful and interesting long after its commercial publishing life has ended.
Many of those books are no longer commercially reissued. Libraries and collectors have kept them within reach through scans, but reading a scan is not always a pleasure: faded type, stains, skewed pages, low resolution and awkward navigation can get between a reader and the book.
That is why Book Remaster exists. We want to turn those surviving pages into digital editions people can comfortably read, study and work with, while keeping the character of the source in view.
A new reading, with the source in view
Words, illustrations, page structure and letterforms all contribute to how a book speaks. Sometimes a clear new layout and a similar typeface are enough. Sometimes the historical type or the original page composition deserves a closer reconstruction. Our three restoration modes make those choices explicit.
Reconstruction is a considered interpretation. We do not promise 100% correspondence with the original. We agree on the intended degree of fidelity through sample pages, identify changed images and record unresolved questions.
Work that can travel further
Commissioned restoration serves the needs of a particular reader or publisher. Alongside it, we prepare selected materials for reuse. Each explicitly marked open release records its source, changes and terms; that status does not extend automatically to every book, font or image on the site.
The showcase brings together our own project demonstrations. They let you look closely at the sources, methods and results before discussing a book of your own.
